ELLIOTT ERWITT. THE HUMAN COMEDY

‘For a photograph to be good it must have balance, form and substance. But to be very good it must also have indefinable magic.’ These words by Elliott Erwitt have become the best way to define his extraordinary, momentous oeuvre. His drive to capture the essence of the everyday through humour, ingenuity and the heart has led him to go down in history as one of the best photographers of the twentieth century.

The exhibition at the Fundación Canal entitled Elliott Erwitt. The Human Comedy, brings together 125 of the photographer’s works through three sections that encompass the most iconic spheres that were Erwitt’s sources of inspiration: people, animals and forms.

The first one invites visitors to observe the unforgettable shots by Erwitt, who managed to turn ordinary moments extraordinary. The second section showcases the iconic snapshots in which he managed to uniquely capture any animal that came before his lens. And finally, the third section offers a survey of his more abstract works through unexpected compositions.

Each of these sections is comprised of ‘working prints’, works originally used in the development of books or magazines, and ‘master prints’, a selection of his most iconic photographs printed with the specific purpose of being exhibited in museums or galleries. Together the ‘working prints’ and ‘master prints’ make up a unique collection directly from Elliott Erwitt’s studio which are being presented to the public for the first time arranged in this way.
